It can be really annoying on a hot summer day if your car’s air conditioner is not working. You’ve turned it on and reduced the air temperature, yet you still have hot air blowing through your vents. Hightech Automotive explains that a number of things could be wrong with your automobile’s air conditioning system, and we can inspect it now to make sure you don’t end up with this problem once summer hits. Here is a list of the common AC problems that we fix on a regular basis.
You Don’t Have Enough Refrigerant
The most common reason why you might have hot air blowing through your vents even though the air conditioner on is that there is a problem with the refrigerant. In most cases, if your air conditioner hasn’t been serviced in years, the refrigerant level is simply too low. You may also have a small refrigerant leak that would not necessarily leave you with spots on your garage floor.
The Condenser Has Gone Bad
Another common issue can be with the air conditioner’s condenser. This part is located in the front of your engine, so it gets a lot of road debris smashing against it while you drive. Unfortunately, this debris can create clogs in the condenser and prevent it from cooling the refrigerant. If the debris is large enough, it can also damage the air conditioner condenser.
The Compressor Is Malfunctioning
The compressor can also malfunction if it hasn’t been used in some time. In this case, you likely have not used the compressor because you haven’t turned on the air conditioner since last summer. Again, if you haven’t had your AC system serviced in years, it’s possible that your compressor is malfunctioning. When the compressor malfunctions, cold refrigerant is not circulated through the system.
The Fans Aren’t Working
Although we set up a scenario at the beginning of this blog post in which hot air was blowing through your vents, if you don’t have any air blowing through your vents, your air conditioning fans are likely malfunctioning. This, too, can be an issue if you have not had your vehicle’s air conditioning system serviced in years. Without any fans, you won’t get any air.
You’ve Got An Electrical Problem
One thing that could be causing a problem with the fans could be an issue with your vehicle’s electrical system. As with your home, each component has a fuse in your vehicle’s fuse box. If the air conditioning system fuse has blown, this will prevent the air conditioner from working. You might also have a wiring problem that is creating an issue with your automobile’s air conditioner.
