I Cannot Believe How Loud My Car’s Engine Is

If your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s engine has suddenly gotten too loud, you probably have a muffler problem. If the muffler is no longer able to muffle the engine’s noise, you will need to replace it. Loud tapping or squealing sounds can be an indication that the exhaust manifold gasket has ruptured and is leaking hot exhaust into the engine. Hightech Automotive can repair your vehicle’s exhaust system if the engine is too loud or you notice any of the other signs of exhaust system problems below.

The Engine Smells Really Hot

If the exhaust manifold gasket is allowing hot exhaust into the engine, the engine will smell hot and overheat. You might smell melting plastic or rubber engine parts, as the exhaust is so hot it can melt them. Anytime you smell anything hot coming from the engine, it’s important that you stop driving your automobile because you could damage the engine if you keep running it.

The Engine’s Power Is Lagging

Your exhaust system could also be clogged and this will cause your engine’s power and acceleration to lag. If the exhaust is unable to make its way out of the tailpipe due to a clogged system, it will prevent engine combustion by gathering in the combustion chamber. A leaking manifold gasket or other exhaust system leak can also reduce your engine’s power by filling the engine with exhaust gases.

The Tailpipe Is Damaged

Sometimes, you can see your exhaust system problems. For example, if the tailpipe is hanging lower than it should be, it is damaged and needs to be replaced. The tailpipe can also get tiny holes in it that affect its performance. Dents, bends, and other tailpipe damage is generally visible to the naked eye. As such, if your tailpipe looks worse for wear, come to our shop to have it replaced.

There’s a Reduction in Gas Mileage

Another indication that your vehicle’s exhaust system is damaged is if you notice a significant reduction in your automobile’s fuel economy. Initially, this reduction may be subtle enough that you don’t notice anything wrong. Over time, however, the engine will struggle more to run, and, as a consequence, burn through gasoline or diesel fuel quicker than it normally does.

You Can Smell the Gasoline

Finally, speaking of gasoline or diesel fuel, you should never be able to smell either in the passenger cabin of your automobile. If you can, the exhaust system is either leaking or clogged. No matter the problem, it’s dangerous to drive your vehicle when you are inhaling exhaust.
