Why Is My Steering Wheel So Hard to Turn?

Hightech automotive advises that a faulty steering pump will make it hard to turn your steering wheel. We will talk more about this below. We are the best auto shop in Forest City, and we’d be happy to check your power steering pump to see if it is failing and needs to be replaced. The reason why it is so easy to turn the steering wheel is that the pump pushes fluid through the system. This hydraulic fluid helps you turn the wheel. Let’s talk more about all of this below.

Difficulty Steering

Problems turning the steering wheel can be a sign that the steering fluid is not being circulated through the system. As we just mentioned, the steering fluid is hydraulic and helps turn the wheel. A malfunctioning pump may be unable to push the fluid through the system or may reduce the pressure under which it pushes the fluid.

Noises When Steering

Another sign that the steering pump needs to be replaced is noises when you turn the steering wheel. The most common sound the pump will make is a groaning sound. It may also moan or squeal. As you continue to turn the steering wheel, the noise will get louder. This is the steering pump protesting and letting you know that it’s in trouble.

Unresponsiveness

The steering may also become unresponsive if the steering pump is going bad. What we mean by unresponsive is that you will turn the steering wheel but your vehicle will not change directions. This is frightening and dangerous. It’s important that you pull over if you are able to and call for a tow truck to our shop so we can find out why your car isn’t turning.

Leaking Red Fluid

Sometimes, the only indication that the pump is going bad is leaking red fluid on the garage floor. Red is the color of power steering fluid. The nice thing about the fluid reservoir is that it is clearly marked in the engine. If you see red spots or puddles on the garage floor, check the fluid reservoir when the engine is cold to see if the level is low.

Silvery-Red Fluid

If the level is low, the pump could be leaking the steering fluid. If you see silvery-red fluid in the reservoir, the pump is dissolving.
