If your headlights are flickering constantly, your car, truck, or utility vehicle may have an electrical problem. Also, pay attention to the interior lights to see if they are flickering. In addition to the light problems, you may also start to have issues with your vehicle’s power accessories if they are not receiving enough power from the electrical system. Here are signs your electrical system is malfunctioning.
Battery Warning Light
The battery light may turn on and remain on if your automobile is suffering from electrical problems. This can be a sign that the alternator is malfunctioning or the battery needs to be replaced. It can also be a sign that something is going on with the electrical system that isn’t right.
Cranking/Dead Engine
You may also end up with a cranking or dead engine if the electrical system is suffering. For example, if the battery is no longer being charged by the alternator, it will die. This makes it difficult to start your automobile. A malfunctioning alternator can also cross the electrical signals. In fact, if the electrical system cannot power the starter, you will be able to get your engine started.
Dead/Dying Battery
The electrical system is what keeps the battery charged. Specifically, the alternator produces electricity while your engine is running. Any excess electricity that isn’t needed elsewhere isn’t to the battery to ensure it doesn’t discharge completely. If you’re constantly having to jump-start the battery because it dies, you may have a problem with the alternator. It may also be time to change the battery.
Fuses That Blow Constantly
Problems with the electrical system can get dangerous if the electrical system is overheating. One sign that it is overheating is in the fuse box. If your car, truck, or utility vehicle has a habit of blowing fuses, this is not a good sign. Ideally, you should never have to change a fuse in the fuse box. If you’re doing this all the time, you need to have the electrical system inspected.
Hot/Burning Smells
Another sign that your electrical system is overheating is hot and burning odors in the engine and inside the automobile. Specifically, these orders will smell like burning electricity, such as burning wires or rubber. If you smell hot electricity, do not take chances of starting an electrical fire. Have your automobile towed to our shop.
