Hightech Automotive can help if your car, SUV, or truck’s engine is making strange noises. There are numerous problems that have audible side effects. We are going to discuss the various engine noises below and the issues that cause them. Do not worry. We’ve got your back.
Grinding
If your car’s engine is making a grinding noise, it is possible that the motor oil level is low. It can also be possible that the oil is not circulating through the engine because the oil filter is clogged. A grinding sound can be a sign of a serious problem, so you may want to play it safe and have your vehicle towed to our shop. In addition to an oil problem, a faulty water pump can also grind.
Hissing
A leaking vacuum hose can cause a hissing sound in the engine. Aside from this, the engine may also hiss if you’ve got a fluid leak. As you can imagine, if the fluid is dripping onto hot engine parts, it’s going to hiss and sizzle. It’s important to find the source of the fluid leak and fix it ASAP.
Knocking
If your engine is knocking, you may have a fuel detonation problem or an issue with the rod bearings in the cylinder block. When the air and fuel are detonated multiple times in the cylinders, it makes a knocking noise. If the rod bearings are loose, the pistons will clank inside the cylinder walls. The latter problem is a more serious one as it can cause damage to the cylinder block.
Popping
Another sound that your engine might make is a popping noise. This noise can also sound as if the engine is tapping. The most common cause of this noise is a leaking exhaust manifold or manifold gasket. This being said, a clogged catalytic converter will also pop.
Roaring
Speaking of the catalytic converter, your engine is going to roar very loudly if this exhaust system piece has been stolen. Another exhaust system part that can make the engine roar and rumble is the muffler. The engine will roar loudly if your muffler has a hole in it.
Squealing
Finally, the engine is going to squeal if you have a loose belt. The most common belt to make a squealing noise is the accessory belt. This being said, your engine may also squeal or groan when you steer the vehicle if the power steering pump needs to be replaced.
