What Are the Filters in My Car?

Your car, truck, utility vehicle, or van has three or four filters that need to be changed on a regular basis. Hightech Automotive lists the filters below and when they need to be changed. It’s important that you change these filters when they are dirty. Otherwise, you run the risk of them clogging and causing engine performance issues and damage. We can change the filters for you without a problem. We are a full-service automotive shop in Forest City with experienced technicians.

Air

The air filter is located in the engine, and this is a filter that needs to be changed every 12,000 miles. It’s important to change the air filter annually if you don’t drive 12,000 miles each year. The air filter purifies the air before it is moved into the combustion chamber where it is burned with gasoline or diesel fuel. A clogged air filter will affect your vehicle’s performance, and if it is clogged bad enough, your vehicle may stall or you may not be able to get it started.

Cabin

Many cars have a cabin air filter that works much like your furnace filter at home. Check your owner’s manual to see if your vehicle has a cabin air filter. If it does, these filters usually need to be changed every 30,000 miles, but your owner’s manual has the exact milestone for your specific make and model. Without a clean cabin filter, you may begin to feel sick every time you drive your car, including getting headaches and feeling sluggish.

Fuel

The fuel filter removes dirt and contaminants from gasoline or diesel fuel twice. This is to ensure that the fuel that makes its way into the engine is as clean as possible. As we mentioned above, the air mixes with the fuel, and this combination is burned in the combustion chamber. A fuel filter should be changed on average every 30,000 miles. If you barely put any mileage on your car at all, have your fuel filter changed every two years.

Oil

The oil filter gets changed during a lube, oil, and filter. This filter cleans the oil after it has picked up all of the dirt and debris in the engine. Depending on how often you have your oil changed is the duration between oil filter changes. In other words, if you get your oil changed every 3,000 miles, your oil filter will be changed every 3,000 miles.
